The most famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805~1875) describwas born in Odense on the island of Funen as the son of a shoemaker and a washerwoman. In 1819, 14-year-old Andersen left his hometown and moved to Copenhagen to follow his dream to become an artist. Accordingly, the scenery of Copenhagen in the 19thcenturyappearedinAndersen’s fairy tales like The Tinderbox, The Little Matchstick Girl, The Little Mermaid, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, as well as in his autobiography, The Fairy Tale of My Life.
The fairy tales of H.C. Andersen have been translated all over the world and are beloved by Korean readers. The fairy tales touch hearts and minds of children and adults alike with a quiet resonance. 2019 is the Danish-Korean Year of Culture marking the 60th anniversary for diplomatic relations, as well as the 200th anniversary for Andersen’s arrival to Copenhagen. To celebrate both events, the Seoul Museum of History and Odense City Museums co-host the exhibition, H. C. Andersen and Copenhagen. While looking into Andersen's fairy tales, we hope visitors will imagine Copenhagen of the 19th century and ponder the message of Andersen describing a city as “Dream, Hope and Challenge".
