Seoul Museum of History Conference 2019 History of Everyday Life & Museum

- Courtroom Experience Room, 1F, Seoul Urban Life Museum

You are invited!

As an urban history museum, the Seoul Museum of History is aimed at retaining the places, eras and memories of the historic capital Seoul. To that end, the museum has surveyed, collected, stored and displayed various artifacts and records attesting to the history and knowledge of Seoul as a means of communication with the citizens. Those artifacts and records are diverse in shape and characteristic, ranging from monumental cultural heritage and historical scenes to everyday items and individuals’ diaries, presenting a wide array of things such as urban relics, historical residences, and handicrafts such as paintings, photographs, texts and sounds. Most notably, the Seoul Urban Life Museum collects memories of everyday life donated by citizens to cherish and share the stories of ordinary citizens of Seoul with many others.

The Seoul Urban Life Museum, a reconstruction of the former Seoul Northern District Court building, is located in northeastern Seoul which was incorporated into Seoul in the second half of the 20th century. It will play a significant role in the intensification and extensification of the Seoul Museum of History in terms of both space and time span it covers. Together with the nine subsidiary museums of the Seoul Museum of History, the Seoul Urban Life Museum will serve as an essential part of the city’s metropolitan museum network formed in the shape of an urban constellation. It is our great honor and privilege for us to have an opportunity to hold an academic conference entitled “History of Everyday Life & Museum” in celebration of the opening of the Seoul Urban Life Museum. The conference is aimed at discussing the themes and scope of urban history museums in terms of the structures and perspectives of “the history of everyday life,” and share ideas about how to materialize valid propositions for museums. You are cordially invited to the conference. We are looking forward to your attendance.

Song In-ho, Director of the Seoul Museum of History
