The long, glass installation in front of the Cheong Gye Cheon Museum symbolizes the Cheonggyecheon water course, which was newly restored to us on October 1, 2005.  Cheonggyecheon consists of a Permanent Exhibition Room, Special Exhibition Room, and an auditorium for cultural performances.  Visitors can learn about the history of the Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project, which ran for two years and three months from July 2003 until October 2005, changing the face of the city forever, and Cheonggyecheon¡¯s future from the permanent exhibition at the Cheong Gye Cheon Museum.

The Permanent Exhibition Room about the past, present and future of Cheonggyecheon can be accessed using the escalator located outside the building.  The exhibition covers the fourth to first floors, and each floor is provisioned with connecting spiral ramps to facilitate the convenient and easy viewing of the exhibition.

Cheonggyecheon is a major stream that ran through Seoul¡¯s downtown area long before the city was made the capital of Joseon. The history of Cheonggyecheon, which has run alongside the history of the city, is on display at the Permanent Exhibition Room of the Cheong Gye Cheon Museum.

The first section of the exhibition concerns the history of the Cheonggyecheon before it was covered up.  Then visitors are led through the space where Gwangtong Bridge, which had been buried underground until the restoration, is recreated to learn about the restoration project.  The exhibition will also help people to gain a better understanding of how the restoration project has changed (and will change) the surrounding areas and aesthetic value of the city, as well as how the Cheonggyecheon has played a part in people¡¯s lives since the Joseon period.  Visitors will also be able to find out about the future roles that the Cheonggyecheon is destined to play as Seoul makes a big leap forward to become an environmentally-friendly city.

1. Information

By the entrance on the fourth floor where the permanent exhibition begins, a video presentation about an exhibition on each floor may be viewed. A miniature model of Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project is also displayed next to the information desk to which one can obtain different information about the exhibition.

2. Until the Covering up of Cheonggyecheon

In this space, the poverty-stricken life of people living by the Cheonggyecheon after the Korean War is conveyed through realistic models.  The video presentation projected behind the models featured scenes of the Cheonggyecheon area in the post-Joseon period and the site of the stream during the period when it was being covered up by various construction works.

3. Before the Restoration of Cheonggyecheon

Once a proud symbol of industrialization and the rapid development of Seoul, the Cheonggye Overpass became obsolete, and many problems such as the ageing of facilities and safety issues surfaced in the surrounding commercial areas.  The photographs displayed on the right-hand walls of the exhibition gallery feature the Overpass that ran through downtown Seoul from Cheonggye-1-ga to Cheonggye-9-ga, as well as the surrounding areas in the period prior to the restoration project.

4. Covered Up Cheonggyecheon

Over the course of more than twenty years, the covering up of the Cheonggyecheon was completed, hiding the stream from view and causing it to fade from people¡¯s memory.  However, the buried Cheonggyecheon suffered grave pollution problems and the danger of structural collapse.   In the space where Gwangtong Bridge has been restored, visitors can experience the dark and grim underground areas below the concrete structure that covered up the Cheonggyecheon until its restoration.

5. Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project

Before starting the project, the City of Seoul launched a full-scale review of and preparations for the potential problems that might arise during the restoration period in order to minimize any negative impact on the life of Seoul¡¯s citizens.  Graphic panels, video presentations, and models are displayed to further visitors¡¯ understanding of how the restoration project was carried out.

6. Nature of Cheonggyecheon

Many species of wildlife that had disappeared from the city returned were finally returned to our side as Cheonggyecheon was restored.  Ecosystems inside the city are finally finding their place, amidst the clean water that runs through the Cheonggyecheon, bringing nature back to Seoul.  In this part of the exhibition, visitors can learn about the natural life of Cheonggyecheon that has been restored with the stream itself.

7. After the Restoration of Cheonggyecheon

Since the restoration of the Cheonggyecheon in 2005, its surrounding areas have constantly changed and evolved. The Metropolitan Government of Seoul will further promote the more balanced development of Seoul through continuous efforts for urban management.  Satellite pictures of downtown Seoul, a plan for the management of Seoul and its surrounding areas, and a plan for the improvement of the Cheonggyecheon neighborhood are featured in this space to help visitors envision the bright future of Seoul.

8. Founding of Hanyang and Cheonggyecheon

The restoration of the Cheonggyecheon ultimately aims to restore the city¡¯s structure, which has been discussed since the founding of Hanyang (the former name of Seoul).  Visitors can learn about the history and significance of Cheonggyecheon, the problems related to the stream running through Hanyang, and the remedies to such problems from the conversations of kings Taejong, Sejong, Yeongjo, and Jeongjo of Joseon.

9. Cheonggyecheon-related Documents

Old maps from between the 17th and 19th centuries are displayed on the walls of the exhibition gallery.  Visitors can learn about how Hanyang was during the Joseon period based on the maps as well as old documents related to the Cheonggyecheon from the Joseon period and the Japanese colonial period.

10. Life and Culture in the Cheonggyecheon Area
Many historical bridges have been built over the Cheonggyecheon since the early Joseon period.  In this part of the exhibition room, models of the five major bridges over the Cheonggyecheon including Supyo Bridge, watermarks, and the past scenery of the Cheonggyecheon neighborhood are displayed.

11. BACK TO A FUTURE ? Cheonggyecheon Tour

The Cheonggyecheon Tour video will allow visitors a full view of the Cheonggyecheon, just as a butterfly would see it from the sky, for approximately five minutes.  Once the video presentation is over, the screen will automatically open to lead the visitors to the Eco Cheonggyecheon section.

12. Eco Cheonggyecheon

Visitors can rest by an image of a pond teeming with lively fish while learning about the Cheonggyecheon, which has been revived as a natural ecological area inside a city.  In the Photo Zone, visitors can take photographs with the 22 bridges of the Cheonggyecheon in the background using chroma-key infusion technology. The Information Search Booths and various documents displayed in this section will provide visitors with information about the Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project.  Furthermore, visitors can leave any stories and wishes they may have relating to the Cheonggyecheon in the Cheonggyecheon Eco Box.
