Introduction |
|
The Cheonggyecheon
Museum not only commemorates the
restoration of Cheonggyecheon (Stream), but also presents its history, culture,
and restoration process as a part of Seoul's
future vision of an environment-friendly, human-centered urban space. It was
established as a specialized museum with the aim of collecting, preserving, and
researching all materials related to Cheonggyecheon (Stream).
Located at 530 Cheonggyecheonno, downriver from Cheonggyecheon (Stream),
Seongdong-gu, the museum opened in September 2005 to coincide with the
completion of the restoration project. Subsequently, on Jan. 1, 2006 it
officially joined with the Seoul Museum of History.
Covering 2,483 square meters of land and made with glass tubing shaped to
symbolize both the direction and clear flow of Cheonggyecheon (Stream), the museum
is four stories tall with two basement floors. It is comprised of a permanent
collection exhibition room (1,553 square meters), a planned exhibition room
(207 square meters), and an auditorium and classrooms for presentations and
various cultural activities. |

Main duties |
As a result of the
Cheonggyecheon Museum becoming a part of the Seoul Museum of History, from 2006
a wide variety of exhibitions centering on the stream and the urban development
of Seoul have been held, and various other activities have been organized,
including specialized classes on the history, culture, and restoration of the
stream (Cheonggyecheon Academy); education programs for children (Cheonggyecheon
Open School for Urban History and Culture, Cheonggyecheon Open School for Urban
Natural Ecology, Cheonggyecheon Open Restoration Experience Kit - Puzzles and
Blocks); and cultural activities that local citizens can enjoy together
(Thursday Themed Theater, Cheonggyecheon Flowing Culture Night). Through these
activities the museum hopes to deepen awareness and understanding of the stream
and its restoration, and promote the museum as a cultural space central to the
Cheonggyecheon area. |
