The March First Independence Movement of Seoul and Pyeongyang
In celebration of the March First Independence Movement centennial anniversary, our museum is introducing the March First Independence Movement of Seoul and Pyeongyang.
On March 1, 1919, a non-violent movement, which came to be known as the “Manse Movement” surfaced amid the plunder, inequality, and discrimination that ran rampant in Korea (then Joseon) under Japanese rule during the Japanese Occupation. The pursuit of Korea’s independence, as well as world peace, essentially formed the basis for the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
Seoul is where the March First Independence Movement was planned and initiated, while the city of Pyeongyang witnessed the most thriving activity of the movement together with Seoul.
This exhibition closely examines and highlights the preparation and implementation of the March First Independence Movement in the two cities.
The anticipation and anxiety that the Korean people must have felt in the midst of preparing for the Manse Movement, in addition to the full-blown shouts of Dongnip manse! (Long live independence!), and the fear the people in confinement are captured throughout the exhibition.
We also hope that this would provide the opportunity for sharing the common consciousness of the Unified Era through stories about the March First Independence Movement of Pyeongyang.
