Seoul Museum of History & Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism’s Joint Exhibition: Collective Market City
Period: September 7, 2019 – October 27, 2019
Location: Special Exhibition Hall B
Department: Exhibition Division
This exhibition presents records and scenes of Seoul’s old markets. For the past ten years, the Seoul Museum of History archived the spaces, people and objects of Seoul’s traditional markets as part of the Seoul Daily Life and Culture Materials and Survey.
Under the theme of “Collective City,” the 2019 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism defined the genesis of the city as a ‘“place of exchange.” Through this viewpoint, images and survey records of markets will be revealed and displayed, and scenes of markets will be newly showcased through works by artists. Seoul’s commercial spaces–such as Namdaemun Market, the department store of markets where goods come and go; Sewoon Arcade and Euljiro that have evolved into a unique urban industrial ecosystem; Dongdaemun Market, the center of the clothing industry; and Cheongnyangni Market with colors that differ by season–are each independent yet all connected with one another. This exhibition, which simultaneously examines the four traditional markets, is the story of people who make and consume objects as well as the background of the city that we live in. Come walk along the market alleyways and observe our lives and the vitality of the city that are reflected by the history and daily lives of Seoul citizens.
